Hi y'all! I am a garden photo-journalist folkartist who grows primarily from seed in containers in a courtyard in New Orleans. My many years of growing in containers led me to photographing my garden- peppers, cannas, bananas and other tropicals, heirloom cottage flowers, herbs (basils!), berries, vines all grown in some 300+ pots now. I won a prize in a Burpee photography contest for this colorful Hungarian hot wax pepper plant pic...

These last years I have published many garden webpages. CITY JUNGLES was the start-- I used my own photos and founded some 50 online garden lists and forums at Yahoogroups and clubs. You may also know me from my columns at the former Themestream and on Zinos and WrittenbyMe and Webseed and from 1999-May 2002, where I wrote Bohemian Balcony  at Suite 101. Working with these people was not financially rewarding but an education never the less, and I now proudly host my own independent site and warn freelance writers about being used on the Internet by hosts who offer space, demand you play by their rules and dangle a carrot making you feel like your passion for writing, because you so enjoy it, can be got for free.
Today, I publish everyday on my own domains,
www.rosemarybasil.com and www.rosemarybasil.net

Meet Tequila TEDDY, garden mascot!

TEDDY and his friends have been online since the beginning offering BEARAPY and POMES with hugs and humor. From TequilaTeddy to Teddy's Literbeary Garden to TeddyBearFun and now TEDDY BEAR GUMBO, he and his friends continue to entertain despite their fractured spelling and grammar which was not understood at the University of Sweat 101 where stuffy penguins in tuxedos prevail.

More about me...

I enjoy sharing stories and photos of my funky many level garden and hearing about others in faraway places. I am a self-taught outsider folk artist whose influences go back to living in Greenwich Village during the psychedelic sixties amongst fascinating mentors like Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsberg.

Seems like I went to school most of my life! Ethnomusicology, psychology, travel and tourism, I have some degrees but who cares? NY is a great state for education but degrees are nothing compared to life experience and I don't want anyone to feel intimidated by horticultural terms or Latin when they read my columns. I try to make whatever I write about fun and have done comedy writing and acting in my younger days.

Relocation to New Orleans led me to study the fascinating local cultures of music, Mardi Gras and Voodoo and my own businesses: Telemark restaurant marketing, musical Underground Parades and library administration for the city of New Orleans. I raised two daughters as a single parent and both work in the performance arts in California. Mama's proud!

When I am in the mood for my folkart, I create original outsider folk art-- Voodoo Garden Blessing Stix, FUNky folkpots and paintings. I think gardening and art should be fun, EZ and affordable, not a snooty social club, therapeutic to those who have health problems or stressful jobs. If you have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue or pain, join me at FOG  for inspiration!

Meeting other kindred bohemians on the internet to swap art and garden tips and inspiration is excellent as it brings together artists and gardeners who work somewhat reclusive or isolated. Be Yourself! DON'T LET NAY-BORES DAMPEN YOUR SPIRIT! GROW CRAZY!

A true flower child, I believe sharing and caring is what it's all about and the older I get the more I realize life is short so let's have FUN while we can and SAVE the environment! Let's enjoy the important things like poetry, sunsets, birdwatching, leapin lizards, flowers, teddy bear hugs, gardening and online shopping...:)))

Hugs and flowers,

Gypsy Rose
New Orleans

Current projects:

My most recent projects have been photographing my garden digitally and putting the photos with poems and articles online daily.
In 2003 I  traveled a bit and put some articles about Florida online. I also discovered the joys of birdwatching! I have not only photos but mini videos of my birds at the feeders  at...
