SEEDFOLKS
Sometimes, even in the middle of ugliness and neglect, a little bit of beauty will bloom. Award-winning writer Paul Fleischman dazzles us with this truth in Seedfolks--a slim novel that bursts with hope. "
This is an especially inspirational book that can be read and shared with your kids. It is a series of vignettes about how a city jungle of folks get together to garden in their own special ways.
After evacuation to California a year ago and countless challenges with the wireless here besides a garganuan writer's block, I woke up with a poem in my head inspired by the re-opening of the Super Dome and the teddy bears new uniforms from Miz Lynn and Build a Bear!

Thanks to veterans, those who are serving and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, but don't forget the families who support them and the sacrifices they too make years after the battles.

My prayers are with all those up north who have to deal with snowy conditions this weekend. May this humorous poem and recent photos of my banana courtyard bring you some warm hugs on a blustery day!

"Hi Rose, I went to the site to see your Veterans Day
tribute. It was so nice!I showed it to my husband, who is a
veteran (he was in the 82nd Airborne) and he was very happy
to see it too. He was a bit down yesterday because at his
work just another fellow veteran mentioned the occasion. So
it was great for him to see that there are others who do
remember! We loved the flag picture and I read your poem to
him. :-) Thanks and best wishes," Renata
"Hello,
I love your poetry. You are a good poet. Congratulations.
Greetings from Atlanta."

"hi rosemary,
I moved away, I am a native of New orleans, born and raised, for 31
years, I moved to Vegas for one year, was so homesick, I almost
needed medication, I moved back home last year, but the money is not
there, I was scouted, doubled my salary, and moved away again, back
to vegas. My heart will always be there, New Orleans is my home. I love the people, they compare to no other.
Thank you so much for all of the work you do, I visit it often, it
keeps me close to home, thank you, thank you, thank you,
You keep me close!
Love,
elizabeth

Q. What are some easy-to-grow annuals of different colors that we could plant in our rainbow garden?
A. Here are some flower choices for the different colors of the rainbow. Blue: ageratum, nierembergia, salvia, China aster, cornflower, and lobelia. (Many other so-called blue flowers are actually purple, so choose carefully.)
Red: scarlet salvia, zinnia, and snapdragon.
Purple: petunia and verbena. Yellow: gloriosa daisies, snapdragons, zinnias, sunflowers, 4 o'clocks and marigolds.
White: nicotiana, petunia, cosmos, cleome, and sweet alyssum.
Green: 'Envy' zinnia and Bells of Ireland.
Pink: snapdragon, cleome, petunia, nicotiana, cosmos, begonia and zinnia.
Orange: marigold, zinnia, cosmos, and tithonia. See more at my Kids Gardening page from

Q:Hey there Basil since your name came up on a search I've gotten lost in your site, kind of fun just like the quarter or shouldn't you really be in the garden district? 'gardless, I'm trying to find out how to ressurect my waterlogged basil plant here in Clearwater, Fla. It ain't doin' so well. Any idears would be appreciated, the tips of one leaf went black so I figured it's burnt, waterlogged or maybe misted too much..... can you give watering tips so I don't do this again, and is there anything I can do to bring the fresh green, but droopy stems back up? My basil's gone impotent! Grassy-ass for any tips sweetie,hastalabyebye...........Matt
A: Basil likes sun and warmth and will do this in cool rainy climates, usually winter down south. It doesn't like soggy soil or too much rain. Mine had problems last summer with all the rain we got. That's why I like pots. Easy to move them under tables and chairs when it rains too hard. But I think there was a lot of black spot going around last year I heard. Even my peppers were affected. Make sure your soil is a light well aerated one. Add perlite or a bit of sand. And make sure pots are well drained with holes in the bottom and not sitting in saucers of water. Don't mist plants unless you want to try a mixture of baking soda (3-4 tablespoons to a gallon of water) Just be sure to wash the leaves when you harvest them and of course NEVER use any fungicides or pesticides on herbs. Go organic. Gardens Alive has some great solutions. Also, try different varieties. I like African blue (a perennial) and Mexican cinnamon basil best. They tolerate both heat and coolness well. Good luck!

"Thank you for the detailed information about the Malabar Spinach. It's the best I've found on the internet. I live in England and have grown them for about 3 years, although I can't get the one with red stems. I propagated my original plant from a cutting I took from a bunch on sale in a grocers in London. Thanks Jo"

De nada, Jo! Glad you enjoyed Malabar. I love it!
