The one you've all been waiting for--my account of my rockabilly girl's visit!

The author with Josie Kreuzer...

The Shim Sham Club is the French Quarter's answer to rock and roll retro fever no matter what decade you crave to cruise your time machine to. It was my first visit and I went there to see my rockabilly daughter, Josie Kreuzer and had no idea what to expect.

The lounge lizards were hanging at the front bar which was a cavern-like room as dark as Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop and dotted with volcano-like red candles. Red leather booths, a most hip jukebox that spanned generations, and props like wagon wheels and tiki masks, a massive gilded Victorian mirror high over the bar made me feel like a guest on the set of Viva Las Vegas meets Night of the Iguana with Nawlins goth Interview with a Vampire thrown in for spice.

From the outside, it is just another old funky looking French Quarter bar which is always refreshing with all the renovations after you fall off neon Bourbon and intellectual Royal. The club, at 616 Toulouse, is known for its burlesque Shim Sham Review and retro dance dj's, but also books bands into a huge back room with stage. The front bar juke joint has theme nites. (Wed-anarchy rules/Thurs-The Strip: 80's Hair Rock/Sat-Drag me with a Spoon 9-11/60's soul, mod, Brit Pop 11-3) It is also the kind of place where tourists who want to experience a Quarter neighborhood bar amongst locals can sit in the dark and drink all nite, quite comfortable and reasonably priced. A friendly stranger offered to take our pic. Despite some age differences, I felt comfortable but I had an edge having joined their mailing list and read that dress was "Fun and Hip" and to leave the Baastadds (sp?) and Mardi Gras beads at home. LOL (See shimshamclub.com for more.)

The diamond of the evening, Josie Kreuzer appeared in a full skirted red vintage 50's dress that made her shine like Princess Grace in cowboy boots. I met her current band, Los Diablos (two she met in her tour to Australia last year, the drummer was from California.)

The backroom was warmed up by local singer Kim Carson who sang bluegrass with a passion and was very well received by her fans. When Josie and her band went on more people drifted in as the tempo revved up several notches. The 2 guitars, drums and upright bass that typify roots rockabilly music played the sound tight and traditional with cool vintage equipment.
Los Diablos
Rockabilly, in case you don't know, is the very first pure rock and roll that was a fusion of hillbilly and blues which Elvis popularized in the 50's. It shocked the American music world post WWII swing era and was oppressed by many Bible belt racists as the devil's music or Negro music, changing the American music scene forever. Because it is such a conglomeration of all those early roots who settled America, it is the purist, the first rock and roll. Bands in the 60's like the Beatles and the Stones imitated it. Iman got David a jacket worn by Little Richard for their 10 year wedding anniversary this year and I'm sure they can buy anything, David knows what is cool. :)
Josie played a long rockin set with no breaks and never seemed to tire. She was more relaxed than the first time I saw her play, joking like a seasoned professional but with a sly sincere grin, the rapport with this band was great! She introduced them as Aussies who don't drink Fosters. Kind of like Cher sending the barbs to Sonny, she playfully teased her bass player about being frisked by cops on Bourbon Street where apparently the guys had tied one on til 6:30 am the nite before. Josie was more animated than the last time I saw her play at Rock and Bowl a few years ago, and her guitar playing more polished and passionate.
When she sang the slow bluesy numbers, "One Way Love" (HOT ROD GIRL) and her new Argentina tango song, "My Sin/Mi Pecado" (BEGGIN ME BACK), you could hear a a feather drop, a communal sigh before the enthusiastic applause and whistles.
The band was electrically charged despite the small house. (The date was added late and didn't get much promo.) They later told me it was a good crowd which meant to them not big but better- attentive sincere fans who knew the music. One girl rushed up to Josie saying "You're here! I can't believe it, I LOVE YOU!"
They had travelled from California to Arizona, Vegas, Chicago, Green Bay, NY Connecticut, NJ, Ohio and back down to the south thru Virginia and Tennessee. (not a ocmplete list by far, see below for upcoming dates.)

The Aussiebillies were charming and said they loved New Orleans even more than Vegas which was their other dreamtown. Because of their passion for vintage it is easy to understand why. They are from Brisbane, Queenland, Australia. Rupert, the guitarist who looked so much like James Dean, said his father was a jazz musician. With little coaxing, Eli the drummer showed off his elaborate tattoos.

I had a lot of fun watching the fans gather round, like a 50's record hop to buy cds bacause I love close up front and personal venues, always have. Buddy Holly and Fonz lookalikes with tattoos, jeans and sideburns and girls in Betty Page bangs and vintage dresses have become fashion 2002.

Rockabilly is a lifestyle that reflects a simpler time, or what seems like one. Surely the 50's were cramped with McCarthy era witchhunts, racism and fear of being nuked, a microcosm and forerunner to our bigger problems today, but when you hear the music you think only of love, hot rods and the fun side, so listen to it and get up and dance. Pick up a book below and some music old and new.

Josie will be flying to Spain to perform in the High Rockabilly Festival Sept. 14.
Here is the last leg of her tour from the JosieKreuzer mailing list at Yahoogroups:

BOOK NOOK:

Go Cat Go!: Rockabilly Music and Its Makers (Music in American Life)
by Craig Morrison
"Rockabilly pioneer Carl Perkins once described his brand of music as "a country man's song with a black man's rhythm." This may be simplifying matters a bit, but you can decide for yourself after reading Craig Morrison's rockabilly bible, whose title also tips its hat to Perkins. All the major figures are here, including Elvis, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, and Jerry Lee Lewis. But rockabilly is a field particularly rich with obscurities and one-trick ponies, and Morrison makes room for them all. If you want to know about the genesis of Malcolm Yelvington's "Drinkin'Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee," or about Sonny Burgess's taste in clothes (all red, to match his guitar and dyed hair), this is the book for you."

Good Rockin' Tonight: Sun Records and the Birth of Rock 'N' Roll
by Colin Escott, Martin Hawkins, Sun Records
Elvis Presley. Jerry Lee Lewis. Johnny Cash. Carl Perkins. Roy Orbison. All got their start in a little recording studio in Memphis called Sun Records. Good Rockin' Tonight is the story, in words and hundreds of photos of Sun Records and its founder, producer Sam Phillips. "From Sun-rise to Sun-set . . . the last word on the first great rock 'n' roll record label."--Rolling Stone.

Terrific, Rose! I really enjoyed reading about Josie, the band, the club and your rockin' good time. Nice pics, too ~ loved Josie's red dress.
I think I'll have to put her CD on now and imagine I'm sitting at the club. Now where's that waiter?
