WHAT IS KING CAKE?
YIPPEEE I am eating my first King Cake for the season!!
It is estimated that more than 800,000 king cakes are consumed in the New Orleans area during Carnival season. Thousands are now shipped via catalogues and the internet too. Order here. You can even buy a mix to make your own or start from scratch with a recipe.
History...
In Christian beliefs, twelfth night after Christmas (Jan. 6) has been heralded and celibrated in history for some centuries as King's Day or the Epiphany, when the 3 kings paid homage to the Christ child bearing gifts. The first king cake, or gautreau des roi or du roi is said to have originated in France during the first half of the 16th century. It was a brioche type ring that had a special bean or pecan hidden inside it. High society even used cold coins.Served at parties, the finder of the bean would be honored as the "king" of the party. New Orleans adopted the Twelth night cake tradition, probably from the French, and continued serving it until Mardi Gras day. The one who finds the prize gets to host the next party and buy the next King Cake. They are served at office parties and cocktail hours at bars, and personal parties as well as carnival related business and pleasure.
Local bakeries produce thousands of cakes beginning January 6 and ending Mardi Gras Day. During the Depression, many bakeries offered a king cake made with French Bread. In 1936, McKenzie's bakery created a sweet-dough cake and placed a porcelain doll in each cake. As the porcelain dolls were manufactured in Japan, during World War II, they were hard to obtain so the bakery began using the tiny plastic baby dolls you see today. They also started the tradition of using sugars colored in the Carnival colors of purple, green and gold you see above to decorate the cakes. Today, besides the plain ones, they also come stuffed with berries, fruit or cheese. Sadly, McKenzies went out of business last year but other popular bakeries who produce these cakes are Gambino's, Randazzo and Haydel's. Haydel's started shipping its king cakes around the country about 12 years ago and is probably the largest producer of all the area bakeries, especially now with the internet.
